Advice to Future GHD and G-Lab Students
This video was made to be watch by future G-Lab and GHD classes. Since most students will be traveling to Africa for the first time, we wanted to offer some advice based on our experiences. We thought that there were some challenges associated with both the working environment and also living conditions that we could potentially provide insights on.
The video begins with the challenges around getting work done in Africa. We identify those as figuring out who to talk to, getting a meeting with those people, how to get something useful out of the meetings, and how to maintain a positive working relationship with those around you.
We then begin a discussion on the environment and what the challenges associated with living in Africa are. We talk about how keeping a positive attitude is critical to success. We explain how making changes to the environment to improve your quality of life may be possible on a small scale (like getting a fan), but larger changes are often impossible and that its best to simply adjust expectations. Our advice is to laugh at yourselves, film funny segments for future classes, try new foods, etc. Most importantly, know that what you are doing is IMPORTANT.
The video ends with a tour of Bukasa Village, where the Kyetume Team was based. Since they were in a fairly remote location, we thought this would help paint a realistic picture of living conditions.
Good luck and thanks for watching!
