The Digital Mobilisation Lab at Greenpeace is a testing ground for new ideas and advocacy experiments. To pioneer a new era of people-powered campaigning, the Lab pushes the envelope of technology use in campaigns. It's an open, global hub of networks -- inside and outside of Greenpeace.

Michael Silberman is the Global Director of the Digital Mobilisation Lab at Greenpeace. The "MobLab" exists to transform how campaigns are fought and won, pioneering a powerful new era of “people-powered” strategies that amplify campaign impact and create positive change. Silberman and his team work with Greenpeace and its allies in 42 countries to envision, test, and roll out creative new means of communicating, organizing, and fundraising online. Silberman chairs the annual Web of Change conference, the premier gathering for leading thinkers and campaigners working at the intersection of technology and social change, and he was most recently a founding Partner at EchoDitto, a digital consultancy empowering NGOs to have a greater impact through the creative use of new technologies.

The human genome is made up of 3 billion base pairs. Reading the genome from a modern, high-speed sequencer is a lot like doing a big jigsaw puzzle. Computer Scientist, Assistant Professor Yanlei Diao (UMass Amherst) leads a multi institution collaboration to develop next-generation, on-demand big computation services for managing and processing these massive amounts of genomic information.

Working with Li-Jun Ma, Assistant Professor in Plant, Soil and Insect Sciences (UMass Amherst), Professor Samuel Madden (MIT), Bai-Lin Wu (Harvard and Children's Hospital), Toby Bloom (the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT), and James F. Gusella (Massachusetts General Hospital), Diao's project was one of 7 to receive seed funding, in the first round of such awards from the Massachusetts Green High Performance Computing Consortium.

In this video members of the team share the science behind their work, what each brings to the project as well as what harnessing high performance computing could bring to genomics, epigenomics and human health.

Thanks to the staff of the Genetics Diagnostic Lab at Children's Hospital, Boston for their help in making this video.

Speaker

Ellen Williams, Chief Scientist, BP

Abstract

We face one of the biggest challenges of the 21st century: providing more and more energy to meet rising demand, but keeping it affordable, secure, reliable and sustainable. But ‘sustainable’ means different things to different people – from discovering and recovering more oil and gas to minimizing the constraints on natural resources used in energy. In this talk, Ellen Williams will outline the importance of scientific research to both finding new solutions and providing trusted data to underpin informed decisions about energy, water, land and minerals.

She will also discuss the importance of effective industry/academic research partnerships to address the challenges of sustainable energy and illustrate this with examples of BP collaboration with MIT and other leading academic institutions.

Piano arrangement on hand-punched paper. A dynamic Gershwin transcription of Rossini's Overture from the opera Barber of Seville. Note: Music rolls or piano rolls were almost never played or recorded by a pianist. Even when the artist was part of the process, arrangers, some skilled, some not, edited the rolls heavily and limited by factory rules and equipment. Performed and interpreted on a player piano from the 1920s.

Boston Properties Senior Vice President and Regional Manager, Bryan J. Koop, presented his analysis and vision of a Revolution in the Workplace to our MSRED graduate students. Bryan’s presentation, as part of Professor Frenchman’s and Professor Roth’s Real Estate Products class, revealed a peek into the future of high-value office environments – specifically office and R & D space. Focused on the knowledge worker, these work environments will have a much greater emphasis on high-quality – yet informal – collaborative spaces over individual, private offices. Bryan’s presentation also included a case study of Boston Properties' recent Atlantic Wharf project, Boston's newest 31-story office tower. Carefully preserving the original facades, this high-rise was constructed atop seven stories of historic 1890’s wharf buildings.

Neil Armstrong once said that our electric grid was one of the greatest engineering achievements of the 20th century. Yet, in the next few decades, our electric grid will need to be modernized to meet the evolving energy challenges of the 21st century. These include increasing renewable energy generation and dealing with the proliferation of distributed energy resources such as rooftop solar panels, electric vehicles, energy storage, and smart appliances, while keeping electric energy supply inexpensive and reliable.

But with challenges come opportunities for innovation. New technologies such as grid data networking, smart meters, analytics and demand response algorithms will help modernize our electric grid and benefit consumers and utilities alike through enhanced energy efficiency, improved reliability, the ability to integrate new sources of energy generation, including at the local level.

Will they be mandated so consumers can start managing their energy bills better?

What innovations are needed to be able to analyze the data and optimize supply and demand in order to deliver benefits to energy providers and consumers?

*The Challenge and Joy of Structural Engineering is the inaugural Edward and Mary Allen Lecture in Structural Design.

Topic 1
The Challenge and the Joy of Structural Engineering
Assuming that this lecture will not only be attended by structural engineers but also by architects and further that as I understand an inaugural lecture should give an overview of my work, I decided for a general description of my projects with emphasis on my collaboration with architects.

Topic 2
Solar Electricity from the Desert – Prosperity for all
Poverty is large parts of this earth and how it could be overcome is what really occupies my mind. Since time probably does not permit to include this topic in my main lecture, I will bring it with me just in case there is time and interest.

Joerg Schlaich
Structural Engineer, Founder, Schlaich Bergermann & Partner, Stuttgart

There has been some interest expressed on technologies that are being used out in the Higher Ed space, so we will be having three products companies present for us to open us some ideas and discussions.

The first presentation will be from 3PlayMedia.com. Josh and CJ from 3Play Media will cover the basics of captioning for accessible online video, including accessibility laws, best practices for creating captions, and the impact of HTML5 and emerging standards. They will also demonstrate how captioning can be used to engage users with new interactive video experiences.

The second presentation will be from Andy at Ensemble Video. Ensemble Video takes the work out of having to manage the flow of digital content yourself, by providing a simple and straightforward platform to enable cost-effective publishing, sharing and streaming of media-on-demand content. With a few clicks of a mouse, users can upload, catalogue, and publish rich media content to websites or digital signage, without requiring assistance from IT. Individual departments and users can manage their own video libraries and easily share content with others. Ensemble easily integrates with media servers, and has the capability to automatically import video files stored on a media server and is available as either a Hosted or Self Hosted Solution.

The third presentation was by Florian Hollerweger about an Austrian startup called Auphonic (http://auphonic.com). They do an automatic audio-post production web service, which has attracted quite some attention in the German-speaking podcaster scene, and also in the higher-education video community (e.g., Opencast/Matterhorn).

About the Presentation

Managing a network platform business can be a complex proposition for the platform owner due to various intricacies that are associated with it. These platforms have distinct users, each having exclusive needs and requirements. Also, success of one side is closely interlinked to the success of the other.

This webinar attempts to implode various aspects of network platforms, helps to develop the understanding of the core concepts and develops key strategies for success of such platforms. It also shows that strategies involved in managing successful network platforms are different from those involved in managing legacy products, and only those companies that are able to understand these key differences are able to successfully create a vibrant ecosystem around the platform.

About the Speaker

Saujanya Shrivastava, technology enthusiast and SDM'11 alumnus, currently works as a senior product manager at Amazon, based out of Seattle. At Amazon, he is involved in bridging the gap between business needs and technology innovation, helping Amazon to provide the highest level of customer experience at an optimal cost.

While Saujanya completed his master's degree in Engineering and Management in the SDM Program, he worked as a strategy consultant in the MIT Center of Digital Business, where he consulted SAP on its next generation platform strategy based on on-demand cloud services. Prior to MIT, he worked in telecom industry for nine years in Europe and Asia and earned an MS in Software Engineering from University of Oxford, UK.

About the Series

The MIT System Design and Management Program Systems Thinking Webinar Series features research conducted by SDM faculty, alumni, students, and industry partners. The series is designed to disseminate information on how to employ systems thinking to address engineering, management, and socio-political components of complex challenges.

MIT Energy Initiative Seminar Series

Speaker

Alán Aspuru-Guzik, Associate Professor of Chemistry and Chemical Biology, Harvard University

Abstract

Green-sulfur bacteria is a remarkable organism that can carry out photosynthesis in low-light conditions such as those present in the bottom of the ocean or moonlight. In this talk, geared for a general scientific audience, I will describe my group's efforts to understand how this organism harvests sunlight so efficiently. I will proceed to describe the possible implications of these light-harvesting mechanisms for enhancing energy transport in organic materials. I will end by briefly discussing our screening efforts for materials for organic solar cells using computer time from distributed donors around the world.

About the Speaker

Professor Alán Aspuru-Guzik is currently Associate Professor of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Harvard University, where he started his independent career in 2006. Alán received his undergraduate degree in Chemistry from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) in 1999. He received the Gabino Barreda Medal from UNAM, which prizes the top achiever in each field of study. After receiving his PhD in Physical Chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley in 2004, under Professor William A. Lester, Jr., he was a postdoctoral scholar in the group of Martin Head-Gordon at UC Berkeley from 2005-2006.

Professor Aspuru-Guzik carries out research at the interface of quantum information and chemistry. In particular, he is interested in the use of quantum computers and dedicated quantum simulators for chemical systems. He has studied the role of quantum coherence in excitonic energy transfer in photosynthetic complexes, and developed methodology for studying the spectroscopy of molecules in nanoscale environments. He and his group recently developed a density functional theory for open quantum systems. He leads the Clean Energy Project: a distributed computing effort for screening renewable energy materials.

In 2009, Professor Aspuru-Guzik recently received the DARPA Young Faculty Award, the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar award and the Sloan Research Fellowship. In 2010, he received the Everett-Mendelsson Graduate Mentoring Award and received the HP Outstanding Junior Faculty award by the Computers in Chemistry division of the American Chemical Society. In the same year, he was selected as a Top Innovator Under 35 by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Technology Review magazine.

MIT Leaders for Global Operations students Jane Guertin '14 and Tacy Napolillo '14 talk about the amazing experience of learning directly from world-renowned experts like Andrew Lo, and then "seeing the classroom come alive" thanks to plant tours and other exposure to LGO partner companies like Amgen. Jane describes how within weeks of learning Little's Law in her operations class, she saw it in practice at Amgen's Rhode Island facility.

As Tacy says, at MIT "the expectation is that I will take this knowledge out into the world and make a difference." Like other LGO students, Jane and Tacy have discovered during their first few months on the program that LGO's partnership with industry makes the program a constant action learning experience.

The power of the LGO alumni network starts well before students arrive on campus. Jane Guertin, LGO '14, describes how she met an LGO alum at a career fair the year she applied who connected her the very next day to two LGO staff members, who then connected her with a current student who spent an hour with her on the phone. "This was before I was even an MIT student, and just the fact that they spent so much time with someone who might be an LGO student was an unbelievable feeling." The alumna, the LGO staff members, and the student in the year above Jane remain contacts today, and Jane says she is excited to be part of the LGO alumni network throughout her career.

The "MIT factor" means constantly being inspired by faculty, alumni and peers to go beyond what you thought was possible. Jane Guertin, LGO '14, says that coming to MIT this year fulfilled a dream she had had since second grade. As she says, "my classmates are incredibly successful and driven, but humble and inspiring. Being around them makes you want to do better and do more." And she is impressed that at such a leading research institution, she has become "so close to faculty in just a few months…there is an unbelievable sense of community here, and I can't imagine being anywhere else."

For Tacy Napolillo, LGO '14, MIT represents an unbelievable array of opportunities.
