Jeff Stein, LGO '13 and Princeton University (Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering) '07, describes his internship at Boeing South Carolina, the newest major aircraft factory in the world and the second production site for the 787 Dreamliner.

As someone who joined LGO to make a career transition to manufacturing, Jeff describes his excitement at doing his internship at such a leading-edge operation as Boeing South Carolina. Jeff's project had two aspects: addressing technical issues around drilling into carbon fiber and titanium, as well as creating kitting solutions for assembly operators at their work cells. "One of the things I really learned, which built on anecdotes from classmates with industry experience, is that there is so much to learn from going to the shop floor and talking to the mechanics, and seeing what is really happening, rather than just sitting behind your desk looking at data."

Jeff's leadership lesson from the project was built on this shop-floor experience. As he says, "what I really learned about leadership was that engagement with the shop floor employees is so important to find out, how can you help them? As a manager, how can you best serve your people? That was an important lesson for me."

Jeff will carry that lesson into his post-LGO job back at Boeing South Carolina.

Jessica Bashkoff, LGO '13 and University of Virginia (Mechanical Engineering '09), talks about her LGO internship at UTC-Sikorsky Aircraft in Stratford, Connecticut.

Jessica's work at Sikorsky was a continuation of the project conducted by Jeremy Lieberman, LGO '12, focusing on reducing rework on the assembly line in the quality division. She focused on root cause analysis of systemic issues that led to recurring discrepancies that required rework.

As Jessica explains, in her previous career she saw the need for root cause analysis, but with her LGO training she gained the tools she needed to identify causes and understand what measures to take to correct the problems.

Jessica describes her work with Sikorsky's hourly employees as key to her project's success. She says, "I spent a lot of time working on the final assembly line on the floor, talking with installers and inspectors who were directly involved with the installations. A lot of the things I learned in communications and leadership classes helped me communicate effectively with the employees. I learned how to be humble with them so I could really interact with them candidly and get the best information."

Some of the Sikorsky managers didn't have data on discrepancies to understand where they were occurring most often. The last LGO intern had pulled together the data but it was not always readily accessible. As Jessica says, "I continued development of [his] tool to make it more user-friendly and pull it into a visual system to show managers where defects were occurring on a heat map. They are now using this tool to focus on the discrepancies that need most attention."

Jessica describes how the internship is a vital part of the LGO experience. "doing a problem in class is not the same as applying it in a real business setting. The internship allows you to practice those skills without any big consequences--it's a safe space to test out your new knowledge."

After Jessica graduates in June 2013, she will continue at UTC as part of their operations leadership program. She chose this as her next step after LGO as, she says, "a great continuation, to use the skills I learned at LGO at work, but also give me some additional development. I really enjoyed my time at UTC and the culture there, which was one of the reasons I went on at UTC. I also was very happy to have the chance to continue my connection to LGO since UTC is an industry partner, because that connection is something I don't want to lose."

Rachel Kelley, LGO '13 and Vanderbilt University (Mechanical Engineering) '05, describes her internship at Spanish fast-fashion company Zara (part of the Inditex group).

Rachel is sponsored at LGO by Boeing, where she has worked in build support engineering and became interested in operations leadership--which led her to LGO.

As Rachel describes it, she chose her project based on the contrasting experiences that it would offer her and allow her to bring back to Boeing. "I was really interested in being part of a company on the forefront of operations research. Because Boeing's products have such a long life cycle, we are not always the fastest at implementing new tools. I was excited to be part of a company like Zara that is at the forefront of the industry in this area."

Rachel's project focused on the third phase of Zara's supply chain, intra-store transfers of inventory to react quickly to changing demand patterns. In her project, she built a model to help guide Zara's decisions on these transfers between stores.

Before starting her project, Rachel says she "had the privilege of working at a retail Zara store, doing that kind of work for the first time since I was 16 years old. It was really hard work and it was key for me to understand how the stores operate on a day-to-day basis and to get my hands dirty. Then when I went to the headquarters, I understood how stores would react, and how my model would affect them as end users."

Rachel attests to the value she sees in the LGO industry internship, in particular seeing her work translate into impact at Zara. "One of my favorite parts of LGO is I get to do masters research at a company, and I know that my work is having a real impact. Zara is actually implementing the model and I got to do the work in a dynamic, exciting, real-world environment."

As she returns to Boeing, Rachel plans to build on this experience in charting a course for herself as a leader. "I gained a confidence in myself to go into a real-world situation, address the problem, find the root cause, figure out how to fix it, and implement that in a real-world context. What I'm bringing back to Boeing is that confidence and ability to know I can change things, from a technical perspective and as a leader in the company, so I can really bring and implement change."

Seth White, LGO '13 and NC State (Industrial and Systems Engineering) '06, describes how he heard about the LGO program, the work he did on his internship at LGO industry partner Amgen, and his plans to keeping Amgen in touch with LGO as he joins the company after graduation in June 2013.

Originally from New Orleans, Seth heard about the LGO program from alumni who worked with him at ABB on power technology. Seth decided to apply to LGO based on the impact these graduates were having on the company and the kind of people they were. As an LGO he is pursuing an MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management and a Masters of Science in Engineering Systems, concentrating in Supply Chain and Manufacturing Systems.

Seth's internship was with Amgen's international supply chain group to develop a risk model and improve planning and execution for emerging market commercialization. The project was based at Amgen headquarters in Thousand Oaks, California. Seth says the challenge of a widespread and diverse group of stakeholders sparked his interest in the project. Seth said that "the skills that I learned in LGO really [supported] what I needed to do in order to have an impact. Specifically, my work on risk modeling, courses around operations management, systems optimization, and risk analysis methods allowed me to build a really robust model that was beneficial in assessing the risks within the company."

The project's management and leadership aspects were equally demanding of Seth's LGO training, as he sought to influence people to support his project and understand organizational processes. Seth also said that his academic support by MIT faculty was essential to his success. "Having advisors from MIT Sloan and the Engineering school and getting their perspectives on the challenge allowed me to create a solution that was well received [at Amgen], and one that I think will stick over time and have a lasting impact."

Seth's wife had their second child just a day after he had to present his project results to MIT faculty and LGO industry partners as part of the midstream review. LGO and Amgen worked to make it possible for Seth to present virtually so that he could stay with his family. As Seth said, "The LGO program was great, and without their support I don't think I would have been able to balance all these challenges."

After graduation, Seth will join Amgen's leadership rotational program in their global supply chain organization. Seth looks forward to being part of the Amgen team of LGO alumni and executives that maintain the company's strong relationship with the LGO program.
