CPTS StarLogo TNG Intro Unit

This screencast shows the finished project of a unit that introduces students to programming using several tools (Scratch, Etoys and StarLogo TNG). A project is "passed" from one tool to another to illustrate the theme "from one to many" and also to illustrate some similarities and differences between the tools. In the StarLogo TNG intro unit activity, students program ants moving around in the 3D world called Spaceland. When an ant eats "food", it creates a new ant.

ZUMIX is an East Boston-based nonprofit organization dedicated to building our community through music and the arts. A core belief is that music is the most powerful means of developing adolescent self-identity. Our award-winning music and creative technology programming is designed to equip youth with the tools necessary to reach their full potential, while creating a safe space for youth to explore who they are and who they want to be. Through community events, ZUMIX provides access to top-quality arts experiences for a low-income, under-served neighborhood.

Madeleine Steczynski, Co-Founder and Executive Director, is an East Boston resident. She founded ZUMIX in 1991 in response to the worst year of violence in the City of Boston's history. Together with ZUMIX's Board of Directors and Youth Advisory Board, she has grown ZUMIX from a kitchen table project into a vital East Boston community institution. As an advocate for the arts, Madeleine has served on the Executive Committee for East Boston Healthy Boston Coalition; was one of the founding members of Cultural Connections, a three-year effort to integrate arts as part of a Sustainable Community initiative funded by The PEW Charitable Trust; and served as an Artistic Fellow for The Boston Foundation’s Arts and Audiences Initiative. n 2009 she successfully completed a $4.6 million dollar capital campaign and moved ZUMIX into its new home. In 2011 Madeleine started a 3-year learning journey as a prestigious Barr Fellow. Madeleine attended Boston College, the School of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts – Boston, and the Executive Leadership Program at Harvard University.

Elena Botkin-Levy, ZUMIX Radio Coordinator, is a radio producer, educator and enthusiast. She started producing radio as a teenager, co-founding RadioActive Youth — a youth-run radio program in Western Massachusetts. Since then she has continued to deepen her love of radio. At WMUA 91.1FM in Amherst, she facilitated and engineered a local community radio-programming block. As a coordinator with the Prometheus Radio Project, Elena organized with community radio stations across the country and she traveled to Kenya to partner with international community radio organizers. She has produced radio documentaries and news for national broadcast. Her radio work has aired on Making Contact, Free Speech Radio News, and Crosscurrents. In Oakland, California, Elena coordinated and produced radio programs with the National Radio Project. She also taught radio production to youth at outLoud Radio in San Francisco.

Co-Director, Things That Think

Joseph Paradiso directs the Responsive Environments group, which explores how sensor networks augment and mediate human experience, interaction, and perception. In addition, he co-directs the Things That Think Consortium, a group of industry sponsors and Media Lab researchers who explore the extreme fringe of embedded computation, communication, and sensing. After two years developing precision drift chambers at the Lab for High Energy Physics at ETH in Zurich, he joined the Draper Laboratory, where his research encompassed spacecraft control systems, image processing algorithms, underwater sonar, and precision alignment sensors for large high-energy physics detectors. He joined the Media Lab in 1994, where his current research interests include embedded sensing systems and sensor networks, wearable and body sensor networks, energy harvesting and power management for embedded sensors, ubiquitous and pervasive computing, localization systems, passive and RFID sensor architectures, human-computer interfaces, and interactive media. His honors include the 2000 Discover Magazine Award for Technological Innovation, and he has authored 200 articles and technical reports on topics ranging from computer music to power scavenging. After receiving a BS in electrical engineering and physics summa cum laude from Tufts University, Paradiso became a K.T. Compton fellow at the Lab for Nuclear Science at MIT, receiving his PhD in physics there for research conducted at CERN in Geneva.

Everyone has a strong physical and emotional connection to the divisions of private and public space, though few ever have the chance to explore the consequences of crossing those lines. This talk will reveal the whispered conversation societies have been having for millennia, in which we discover what defines private space and what happens to us as individuals and communities when those lines become blurred. We'll talk about security in the ancient world, revolutions both French and industrial, and the role of governments as determined attackers.

Schuyler Towne is obsessed with locks. He got his start as a competitive picker, winning the American Open and competing internationally as well. At an early point in his lock collecting he came across an old "Yale & Towne" padlock. This potential familial connection drove his interest further and he spent the next several years of his life trying to understand everything he could about locks. From how they work and why they fail, to the stories of who invented them and when and where they came into existence.

His research in urban mobility systems addresses the energy and mobility problems of 21st century cities such as energy efficiency, congestion, urban land-use, and carbon emissions leading to global warming. He has led and managed the conceptual and design development of a series of Lightweight Electric Vehicles (LEVs) within the Smart Cities group including the CityCar, RoboScooter, and GreenWheel Smart Bicycle. At the Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers’ (SPIE) Practical Holography conference in San Francisco the weekend of Jan. 23, members of Michael Bove’s Object-Based Media Group presented a new system that can capture visual information using off-the-shelf electronics, send it over the Internet to a holographic display, and update the image at rates approaching those of feature films. Using a single Kinect camera and standard graphics chips, MIT researchers demonstrate the highest frame rate yet for streaming holographic video.
