This panel brings together representatives from development finance and knowledge producing institutions to discuss the how these changes are evolving both institutionally and on the ground. International institutions are evolving and restructuring their partnerships with developing countries, shifting their focus from the national to the municipal scale, even moving from traditional financing to innovative knowledge sharing and production, including the facilitation of South-South exchange. Yet some of the persistent development challenges remain, and their urgency is more immediate with rapid urbanization in much of the developing world, the ongoing deficits in basic services for the informal poor, the impacts of human-induced natural disasters, and more. How is knowledge shared between these international institutions and among developing countries, especially in an era when many middle-income countries are financing their own development and even translating their resources and knowledge to lower-income countries?

Local, national, and international social movements are presenting new challenges to institutional arrangements at each of these scales. This panel is an attempt to understand what is significant about different types of social movements for the ways in which formal institutions engage with issues of urban development. What opportunities and challenges do these movements pose for ordinary poor people? What is leading institutions to build deeper engagements with social movements, especially those with a grassroots, community base? What potentials and pitfalls exist for these partnerships? How can these movements and partnerships be understood through academic research agendas? And can social movements develop alternative methods of development practice that can meet the extent of the challenges of urban poverty?

ghdLAB is a graduate-level class at MIT Sloan School of Management that goes beyond traditional boundaries by taking on practical challenges at the front lines of healthcare delivery.

This video was put together by Nicole Zenel (Sloan MBA 2011) using footage from the 2011 ghdLAB class.

This video is meant to showcase the experiences of students participating in MIT Sloan’s ghdLAB, which is an intensive course that has MIT Sloan MBA students working in the classroom and in the field with enterprises in developing and emerging markets to address problem posed by the entrepreneurs themselves. One major question is: Why do so many people fail to benefit from the vast progress that modern medicine has made.

In February 2011, 44 students travelled to Africa and India in teams of four to try to understand the challenges of delivering health care in resource limited settings and to lend their business skill sets to the organizations trying to solve these problems. The results of this course were life changing, for students, the organizations they worked with and the populations these organizations serve.

In this video you will see pictures and clips, taken by the teams themselves, showing the beauty of Africa, the communities’ students lived and worked in, and the interaction between students and their hosts

It is among the grandest topics in scholarship: Why do some nations, such as the United States, become wealthy and powerful, while others remain stuck in poverty? And why do some of those powers, from ancient Rome to the modern Soviet Union, expand and then collapse? From Adam Smith and Max Weber to the current day, scores of writers have grappled with these questions. Some scholars, like Weber, have argued that religious or cultural differences create vastly different economic outcomes among countries. Others have asserted that a lack of natural resources or technical expertise has prevented poor countries from creating self-sustaining economic growth.

Economists Daron Acemoglu of MIT and James Robinson of Harvard University have another answer: Politics makes the difference. Countries that have what they call "inclusive" political governments -- those extending political and property rights as broadly as possible, while enforcing laws and providing some public infrastructure -- experience the greatest growth over the long run. By contrast, Acemoglu and Robinson assert, countries with "extractive" political systems -- in which power is wielded by a small elite -- either fail to grow broadly or wither away after short bursts of economic expansion.

Read more at: http://web.mit.edu/newsoffice/2012/why-nations-fail-0323.html

Every year, aspiring and established entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, angel investors, academics and others interested in entrepreneurship and bottom-up development convene at this marketplace of ideas.

Increasingly, entrepreneurship is being recognized for its role in creating prosperity and fostering good governance around the world. Today, innovation, entrepreneurial leadership and bottom-up development can effectively address the issues faced by low-income countries and stimulate progress in their economies. The two-day conference will explore the challenges and opportunities entrepreneurs encounter in the fields of education, health, technology, media, and manufacturing. The Convergence will also address financing and the nature of entrepreneurship from multiple perspectives.

This video lesson will focus on systems that are said to be in equilibrium - that is, systems that are not allowed to move away from their original places or rotate about their axis. Students will learn about static equilibrium by exploring themselves what is meant by translational equilibrium and rotational equilibrium and whether an equilibrium is Stable, Unstable, or Neutral.

Nobody knows precisely why it works, but doctors have known for decades that the healing process for open wounds can be greatly speeded up by applying negative pressure — that is, suction — under a bandage sealed tightly over the affected area. The speculation is that it helps by drawing bacteria and fluid away from the wound, keeping it cleaner.

For patients, there is a benefit even beyond the speedier healing. Traditional dressings need to be removed and replaced — sometimes painfully — up to three times a day, but with the negative pressure system dressings can be left in place for a few days. But in the developing world, there's a problem: The systems are expensive, and they need to be plugged in or powered by batteries that last only a few hours. In many developing nations, a reliable source of electricity is rarely available.

That's the problem that students in an MIT mechanical engineering class decided to tackle a few years ago. With the help of Dr. Robert Sheridan from Massachusetts General Hospital, the students developed a simple, inexpensive and lightweight version of the system that required no power supply and could be left in place for days. One of those students, Danielle Zurovcik SM '07, continued to work on the project and made it the subject of her master's thesis.

Zurovcik demonstrates here how the negative pressure pump can help seal a wound.

Muhammad Yunus, Founder and Managing Director, Grameen Bank; 2006 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate; Ambassador for the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS

Imagine a bank that loans money based on a borrower's desperate circumstances -- where, as Muhammad Yunus says, "the less you have, the higher priority you have." Turning banking convention on its head has accomplished a world of good for millions of impoverished Bangladeshis, as the pioneering economist Yunus has demonstrated in the last three decades. What began as a modest academic experiment has become a personal crusade to end poverty. Yunus reminds us that for two-thirds of the world's population, "financial institutions do not exist." Yet, "we've created a world which goes around with money. If you don't have the first dollar, you can't catch the next dollar." It was Yunus' notion, in the face of harsh skepticism, to give the poorest of the poor their first dollar so they could become self-supporting. "We're not talking about people who don't know what to do with their lives '.They're as good, enterprising, as smart as anybody else." His Grameen Bank spread from village to village as a lender of tiny amounts of money (microcredit), primarily to women. Yunus heard that "all women can do is raise chickens, or cows or make baskets. I said, 'Don't underestimate the talent of human beings.' " No collateral is required, nor paperwork just an effort to make good and pay back the loan. Now the bank boasts 5 million borrowers, receiving half a billion dollars a year. It has branched out into student loans, health care coverage, and into other countries. Grameen has even created a mobile phone company to bring cell phones to Bangladeshi villages. Yunus envisions microcredit building a society where even poor people can open "the gift they have inside of them."

About the Speaker(s): Muhammad Yunus made his first loan of $27 to a group of 42 Bangladeshi village women, to help free them from debt to moneylenders and allow them to build their furniture business. He established the Grameen Bank in 1983 to help millions of Bangladeshis escape from poverty. The bank now has branches in more than 36 thousand Bangladeshi villages and in other countries.

Yunus, a Fulbright Scholar, earned a Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University in 1969. Yunus has received the Ramon Magsaysay Award (1984) from Manila; the Aga Khan Award for Architecture (1989) from Geneva; the Mohamed Shabdeen Award for Science (1993) from Sri Lanka; and the World Food Prize by World Food Prize Foundation (1994) from the US. His autobiography, Banker to the Poor, was published in 1998.

Zeinab Badawi, Presenter, The World, BBC Four; Jean-Robert Cadet, Author, Restavec: From Haitian Slave Child to Middle-Class American; Steven Law, Deputy Secretary, U.S. Department of Labor; Kevin Bales, Director, Free the Slaves, Inc.; Professor of Sociology, University of Surrey Roehampton, in London; Jagdish Bhagwati, PhD '67, University Professor of Economics and Political Science, Columbia University; Roger Plant, Head of the Special Action Program to Combat Forced Labor, International Labor Organization

Jean-Robert C_det lost his childhood, when at the age of four, he became a slave to a rich Port-au-Prince family. After years of washing floors, fetching water, and sleeping under the kitchen table, he found freedom when his owners moved to the U.S., and kicked him out. C_det, who says the "biggest part was the emotional detachment," wonders today why the U.S., Haiti's biggest foreign donor, doesn't "link foreign aid to the elimination of slavery."

Kevin Bales describes hereditary forms of slavery in the developing world where generations of a family "are put up as collateral against a loan" that they're never able to pay back. But, he points out, the U.S. has its own problems: "We have found young women from Ghana, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, who are called by the people who control them 'the creature, the animal,' and used for years, and sexually abused, as domestic servants in Washington, D.C. suburbs. 'We found in 90 U.S. cities people caught up in forced slavery."

Stephen Law describes how U.S. Labor Department investigators looking into simple violations of wage laws find "intimidation, coercion and secrecy" surrounding child labor and other illegal exploitation. What's worse, he says, "cultural reinforcement locks people into this lifestyle," a kind of brainwashing that inhibits people from escaping their enslavement.

Roger Plant says that of the 12 million forced laborers globally, most are women and children. He corrects the assumption that "forced labor is something imposed by states. Today four-fifths of all forced labor is imposed by private agents '.People exploiting bonded labor make significant profits."

Jagdish Bhagwati offers some hope: "Social institutions themselves can change as a result of economic and other incentives. ' (Forced laborers) have to be able to walk away and get freedom, find new jobs, which is where economic prosperity abetted by globalization matters."

Nash, President, B.E.&K., Inc.'s Government Group; Former Director, Iraq Project and Contracting Office (Baghdad); Harvey M. Sapolsky, Professor of Public Policy and Organization Department of Political Science

Judging from these panelists, the more intimate your experience of Iraq, the more optimistic you are likely to be. David J. Nash was fully immersed. He organized the multi-billion dollar reconstruction effort of Iraq's infrastructure in 45 days. His 2800 projects ran the gamut from new power plants and water companies, to schools and medical clinics. If that wasn't enough, he had to use peacetime contracting rules and contend with terrorist attacks. "Some people were afraid we'd fail, some feared we'd succeed, and they'd get together and make my job interesting," says Nash. Yet, in spite of the obstacles, including the ongoing insurgency, Nash believes the "future is bright."

Charles N. Patterson engaged with Iraqis in envisioning a Saddam-free future -- before the invasion. The "Future of Iraq Project" brought together diaspora Iraqis and Kurdish Iraqis with U.S. government agencies in the summer of 2002 to envision a political transition. Seventeen working groups tackled such questions as what to do with the large Baath security forces, and how to introduce democratic ideals. The problem was not only a lack of consensus but conflicted U.S. intentions. "Voices in the administration 'sold the idea that Iraq liberated would immediately embrace democracy, modernize and be at peace." Today, Patterson believes "a lot of things have begun to go right after a bad start."

Harvey Sapolsky states the U.S. handled the war effectively but that "when the war ended, things seemed to fall apart." Sapolsky participated in a Defense Science Board review of war planning and post-war administration. We've "handicapped ourselves in two ways," says Sapolsky. "We don't have a colonial service 'so no one's planning to stay a long time," and "we don't have a contracting system to run reconstruction during an insurgency."

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:
Yosef Jabareen received his Ph.D. in Urban Planning from the Faculty of Architecture and Town Planning at Technion, Israel and earned a Masters in Design Studies at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University. He was a Krietman Fellow at Ben Gurion University and Rothschild Fellow. He received the Tami Steinmetz Award for Peace Research at Tel Aviv University. At MIT, his research focuses on efforts to create trust among different ethnic communities.

Prior to joining C&O Resources, an international consulting and business development group, Charles Patterson worked in the State Department, specializing in Middle Eastern issues. He also served in the Bureau of Near East and South Asia Affairs, and in Italy, Turkey, Tunisia, Nigeria and Malta. He was a coordinator of the State Department's task force during Operation Iraqi Freedom. He holds a B.A. from the University of Michigan and an M.A. from Boston University in International Relations.

Rear Adm. David J. Nash, P.E., USN (Ret.) directed the Iraq Program Management Office, and the Project and Contract Office for the Coalition Provisional Authority. He oversaw $18.4 billion in reconstruction projects funded by the U.S. government. In September, 2004 he became president of B.E.&K.'s Government Group. BE&K Inc. is one of the Southeast's largest privately held companies, with operations in pulp and paper construction, power/cogeneration construction, and process industrial and manufacturing construction. He previously served as Senior Vice President of Parsons Brinckerhoff Construction Services. Nash has almost four decades of experience in building, design and program management.
