Dr. Robert Langer of the MIT Department of Chemical Engineering

Engineering of Integrated Materials and Cell Based Systems

I will start by discussing how I - as a chemical engineer - initially got involved in the interface between biology and engineering, which would lead to the isolation of the first angiogenesis inhibitors and the development of controlled release systems for macromolecules. I will then cover the engineering of novel microelectronic systems. Such systems have the ability to sense levels of drugs or other substances in blood. They can also secrete drugs into the bloodstream. Next, the possibility of creating cell based tissues and organs - and the challenges associated with that - will be discussed. Finally, the development of new high-throughput, polymer-based tools that can control the differentiation and growth of stem cells and other cells will be examined.

Friday, February 4, 2011 - 3:00pm
MIT Campus - Stata Center, room 32-123 (Webcast)

Distinguished Lectures provide an opportunity for the Science and Technology Center on Emergent Behaviors of Integrated Cellular Systems (EBICS) to host internationally recognized leaders in relevant engineering, science, and education fields for the benefit of the broad academic community. The Distinguished Lectures are broadcast live to all EBICS partner institutions with the objective of educating a diverse audience in areas relevant to the work of the Center.

Microsoft Research

Synthetic biology offers the prospect of engineering microbes to fight disease or produce biofuels, but designing the necessary DNA instructions is normally an arduous task. With software written by Andrew Phillips, who heads the Biological Computation Group at Microsoft Research in Cambridge, U.K., scientists can simply select the actions they want the microbe's proteins to perform and get back a corresponding DNA sequence.

In this session, four professors from various departments and answer questions in regards to the graduate admissions process. All application processes are similar, however key differences are highlighted below. For the Electrical Engineering Department & Computer Science, applications are submitted online and read by 78 - 120 professors, each individual application is read by 5 - 7 professors. The committee looks for whether applicants can do good research, independence, excitement, and passion. Requirements for both entrance and/or while in program: 3 Recs, Tech Qualifying & Research Qualifying Exam, becoming a Teaching Instructor, write a PhD thesis and Defendant to the Public. For the Chemical Engineering program, applications are submitted via paper format and read by three or more faculty, and submission of Statement of Objectives. The committee is looking for motivation and any indicators in whether applicants will succeed in the program if grades are shaky. For the Physics Department, applications are submitted online and read by 20/70 faculty while paying attention to incoming student chemistry (ie: # of astrophysicists vs. # particle physicists) and taking a holistic approach, but also looking for independence, analytical and course skills. For the Biological Engineering department, applications are submitted online and read by 15-20/30 faculty, of the admissions offers there is a 70% yield, and of the process itself: there is a two part division. A) Invitation. (Here students who are invited back to campus have the ability to cointerview and are required to participate in a poster session to talk about their research.) B) Admission

Graduate Admissions Panel:
Ed Bertschinger : Professor & Department Head of Physics
Paula Hammond : Bayer Chair Professor of Chemical Engineering, Former Head of Graduate Admissions
Leslie Kolodziejski : Professor & Graduate Officer for Electrical Engineering & Computer Science
Forest White : Associate Professor & Graduate Officer for Biological Engineering
The samples are lysed, and then the estrogen is extracted into a polar solvent (methanol), while the unwanted parts of the blood sample are extracted into a non-polar solvent (isooctane).

Charles L. Cooney, SM '67, PhD '70, Professor of Chemical and Biochemical Engieering; Co-Director, Program on the Pharmaceutical Industry; Mark R. Bamforth, Senior Vice President, Corporate Operations and Pharmaceutical ; Genzyme Corporation; Peter Walsh, Director of Business Development, UPS Consulting ; Abbot Weiss, Senior Lecturer; MIT Center for Transportation and Logistics ; ; Daniel W. Engels, Director, R.F.I.D. Healthcare Initiative

Genzyme is a leader in personalized medicine, as Mark Bamforth demonstrates. For instance, the company collects cartilage from a single patient, grows it in the lab, and sends it back securely to that same patient. The system, says Bamforth, tolerates "no mix ups." But the company also deals in drugs sent to hundreds of thousands of kidney dialysis patients. Each kind of product must adhere to a specific kind of manufacturing and distribution process, and the regulations of the FDA and other countries. Bamforth must navigate "a complexity and diversity of supply chains."

Peter Walsh works behind the scenes at UPS, making sure those brown trucks deliver to the right location at the right time. He believes that "healthcare is a good 20 to 30 years behind other industries" in terms of getting the goods from supplier to manufacturer to consumer. "We see in big pharma a silo approach. That needs to change ' and means sharing of information scary to think of in this industry."

Abbott Weiss sees in pharmaceuticals "a highly fragmented set of supply chains" at a time when globalization poses increased risks, such as theft and diversion, and cost pressures. He describes working at Polaroid, and shipping out 120 million packs of film a year, with 140 countries each requiring different labeling. "Exception management is the rule in supply chains," says Weiss. And unlike film, there are "life and death implications of getting the right medicine at the right time and right place." The good news is that much of the technology for solving tracking and distribution problems already exists, Weiss says.

One such technology, radio frequency identification (RFID), is a good first enabling step for pharmaceutical makers, says Daniel Engels. "If I know what I have and where it is, I can do something about it." The critical problem will be "asset visibility," communicating this unique product information to suppliers and customers. And this kind of tagging will prove especially difficult for generic or bulk drugs, sent through distributors. The "end game" is information sharing.
