It may be a small local memory backup server or a huge, remote “server farm” providing enormous amounts of streamed data, or anything in between those two extremes. For many of us, this is a hidden world that we are only vaguely aware of, yet it is central to the digital revolution that surrounds us. This program will pull the curtain back on that world and bring us up to date on some of the major issues influencing server system design and deployment.

Research aimed at predicting future climate activity has primarily focused on large and complex numerical models. While this approach has provided some quantitative estimates of climate change, those predictions can vary greatly from one model to the next and produce doubts in the projected outcome.

In this Faculty Forum Online broadcast, Professor Kerry Emanuel ’76, PhD ’78 discussed a new approach to climate science that emphasizes basic understanding over black box simulation. After Emanuel presented a brief overview of climate research, he took questions from the worldwide MIT community via video chat.
In 2006, Emanuel was named by Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world. He is the author of What We Know about Climate Change, a book The New York Times called “the single best thing written about climate change for a general audience.”

Has the age of 2% annual growth in jobs and salary levels come to an end in the West? Will the jobs drain to the East quicken? Are policymakers leading us away from the precipice or towards it? Often contrarian, Jon Moynihan's lecture draws on his decades of experience at high levels of business and government, together with calculations and analysis never seen before, to ask: is the continued economic decline of the West inevitable? And what, if anything, can we do to stop it?

"A frighteningly persuasive lecture that makes it clear that even as the world gets richer, the West may get poorer." ~ Matt Ridley, Author, 'The Rational Optimist'

Filmed in 2012, Jon Moynihan, Chairman of PA Consulting Group, speaks at the London School of Economics showing how previous speeches in 2009 at the MIT Alumni Association ‘View from the Top’ event, London and the MIT Club of Germany Symposium, Frankfurt have correctly forecast the persistent downtown in Western economies.

About the Presentation

We are in the early stages of a very important transformation—the transition to a digital money ecosystem. This transformation is likely to be among the most exciting, important, and challenging initiatives the world will undertake in the coming decades.

The transformation involves more than the transformation of money (cash, checks, credit and debit cards, etc.) from physical to digital objects that we will carry in our smart mobile devices. It encompasses the whole money ecosystem, including the global payment infrastructures, the management of personal identities and personal financial data, the global financial flows among institutions and between institutions and individuals, the government regulatory regimes, and more.

This webinar will present an overview of this digital money transformation and the technical and societal forces that are driving it. We will also discuss some of the potential major consequences to business, the economy, and society in general.

For more information on this topic, please see Dr. Wladawsky-Berger's blog entry.

About the Speaker

Dr. Irving Wladawsky-Berger worked at IBM for 37 years, where his primary focus was on innovation and technical strategy. He then joined Citi as Strategic Advisor working on innovation and technology initiatives including the transition to mobile digital money and payments. He is Visiting Lecturer at MIT’s Sloan School of Management and Engineering Systems Division, Adjunct Professor in the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Group at the Imperial College Business School, and Senior Fellow at the Levin Institute of the State University of New York.

About the Series

The MIT System Design and Management Program Systems Thinking Webinar Series features research conducted by SDM faculty, alumni, students, and industry partners. The series is designed to disseminate information on how to employ systems thinking to address engineering, management, and socio-political components of complex challenges.

Our Lynden InvenTeam invention is a 3 wheeled recumbent trike with a composite frame. The trike will have an active leaning suspension which will allow riders to curve into corners just like a bicycle, but have more stability. Our invention is solving a real world problem. People who have physical limitations such as spina bifida can not ride a regular bicycle. With our invention they can enjoy the experience of riding a bike, while getting a good core body workout.

Read more on the Lynden Lemelson-InvenTeam's blog: http://lyndeninventeam.blogspot.com/

Jamshied Sharifi was commissioned by the MIT Wind Ensemble to create an extended composition that recognizes the Arab Spring, a revolutionary wave of demonstrations and protests occurring in the Arab World that began in December 2010. The piece uses Arabic maqam as source material. Mr. Sharifi is composer-in-residence at MIT March 12-17, 2012, sponsored by the MIT Visiting Artist Program and Music and Theater Arts.

At MIT and Berklee, he studied with the legendary Herb Pomeroy, who asked him at graduation to lead the MIT Festival Jazz Ensemble. While in Boston, Sharifi studied piano with Charlie Banacos, and West African drumming with Godwin Agbeli and Abubakari Lunna.

Sharifi has composed the scores for the feature films Harriet The Spy, Down To Earth, Clockstoppers, The Thomas Crown Affair, Muppets From Space, Footsteps in Africa, 14 Women, and for many other films and television shows.
About the Logs

In the spring of 1949 a group of MIT students came together to form the Logarhythms, MIT's premier all male a cappella group. Building upon the influence of barbershop tunes they swiftly began singing all over campus, building a fan base throughout Cambridge. Over the next few decades the 'Logs' introduced gospel, doo-wop, and modern hits, performing at several MIT events including Commencement. While balancing their academic workload, athletics, and keeping fans at bay, the Logs managed to record several albums, which last to this day.

In the late 1990's the Logs made the transition from barbershop to modern a cappella introducing vocal percussion and complex arrangements of modern songs. The Logs performed off campus more often and toured around the country to California, Texas, Ohio, New York, Florida, and all of New England. Last year the Logs celebrated their 60th anniversary as one of the country's finest a cappella groups. Their tremendous success is attributed to its alumni who have shaped this group into what it is today.

His first U.S. investment is in SoFi, a San Francisco startup transforming the student loan industry by leveraging the power of technology, community, and alumni investment capital. SoFi's pool-to-pool business model provides alumni investors with a double bottom line return – allowing alumni to earn a return on their capital while also doing good. Joe invested personally within 10 minutes of meeting SoFi's co-founder, Mike Cagney.

SoFi empowers alumni to provide student loan funding through their IRAs while earning an attractive financial return and making a positive difference in their community. Mike also co-founded Cabezon Investment Group, a global macro hedge fund. He holds an M.S. in Management from Stanford Graduate School of Business.
