Linda Elkins, professor in Earth Science, opens her talk with a quote saying, " Work when you can and do your absolute best." Elkins also reveals that she did not get to where she was today via the "traditional path". In her academic year as a sophomore, she started a research project handed down by her professor with end results that were successful, but her fear of not knowing every answer to a question kept her from presenting her work. From this experience, she mentions "If you feel unconfident, fake it till you make it because nobody is expecting you to know everything." As years past, she ran her own company and learned how to manage a team, building and managing a budget, and much more which in turn elevated her skills once she went back for her PhD. She leaves remarks by saying, "Go to grad school if you're passionate, make contact with your advisors because their influence is what influences your career, and be tough." <br>

Like all research, we start with a problem, question, or hypothesis. In this presentation, six graduate students aim to discuss the connections between the dividing beta family of stable homotopic spheres and the congruences of q-expansion of modular forms. In simple terms, think of constructing and mapping out spherical groups into other spheres. <br><br>

In this session, four professors from various departments and answer questions in regards to the graduate admissions process. All application processes are similar, however key differences are highlighted below. For the Electrical Engineering Department &amp; Computer Science, applications are submitted online and read by 78 - 120 professors, each individual application is read by 5 - 7 professors. The committee looks for whether applicants can do good research, independence, excitement, and passion. Requirements for both entrance and/or while in program: 3 Recs, Tech Qualifying &amp; Research Qualifying Exam, becoming a Teaching Instructor, write a PhD thesis and Defendant to the Public. For the Chemical Engineering program, applications are submitted via paper format and read by three or more faculty, and submission of Statement of Objectives. The committee is looking for motivation and any indicators in whether applicants will succeed in the program if grades are shaky. For the Physics Department, applications are submitted online and read by 20/70 faculty while paying attention to incoming student chemistry (ie: # of astrophysicists vs. # particle physicists) and taking a holistic approach, but also looking for independence, analytical and course skills. For the Biological Engineering department, applications are submitted online and read by 15-20/30 faculty, of the admissions offers there is a 70% yield, and of the process itself: there is a two part division. A) Invitation. (Here students who are invited back to campus have the ability to cointerview and are required to participate in a poster session to talk about their research.) B) Admission <br><br>

June 21, 2011 A group of graduate student present Dr. Cesar Hidalgo's work on The Building Blocks Of Economic Complexity. The stepping stone, Adam Smith and his work in trying to understand why different countries had differing diversity of capabilities, the students used a Method of Reflection for quantification purposes in which they validated their findings by producing a model. They strived to understand why countries were linked to products and vice versa, why products were not linked to products, and countries not linking to other countries. In addition, with their model they aimed to demonstrate and predict future product exports. Presenters: Angel Asant, Maha Haji, Kathryn Meehan, Gloria Nyankima, Dominique Rice, Raspberry Simon, Dr. Cesar Hidalgo.

Jacquin Niles, Professor of Biological Engineering, with a main focus on Malaria research presents his work. Malaria, an asexual parasite infecting disease usually transferred by insects and animals, contributes a high mortality rate in Africa and South Asia especially within children. Based on this disease, Niles work gives precedence to finding out how Malaria works using RNA aptamers, equalized heme, and cellular networks.

In this presentation, seven grad students talk about their collective objective based on Professor Niles research: to figure out how cellular networks function and the role that small molecules play in these networks through gene knockout, RNA interference studies, and hybird studies. RNA apatamers' main function is to bind to a specific molecule. This material is great for gene expression, can be developed invitro, can be expressed inside a cell, and is useful in exploring protein based networks. To prove Prof Niles hypothesis, an equalized heme based synthetic pathway model was created. <br><br>

Tish Scolnik ('10 Course 2) received two Fellowship awards from the Public Service Center to continue her work on the design of small-business wheelchairs in Tanzania, which was inspired by the ideas and skills she gained from a Service Learning course entitled Wheelchair Design in Developing Countries. She has worked on appropriate attachments like a collapsible desk and an umbrella holder that enable wheelchair-bound individuals to operate businesses from their wheelchairs. She was also part of the winning IDEAS Competition 2008 team, Leveraged Freedom Chair, which proposed a wheelchair that would allow individuals to navigate rough terrain in developing countries. She is a Truman Scholar and one of Glamour Magazine's Top 10 College Women in 2009.

Grace Lee ('10 Course 7) was the President of the MIT chapter of Habitat for Humanity (HFH). With the help of Public Service Grants, Grace Lee and MIT Habitat for Humanity volunteers have worked to provide Habitat families typically living in inadequate shelters with good homes. As HFH president, Grace Lee has transformed a small club that performed one event each year to a club that now has a large volunteer base, increased visibility, and co-sponsors a Habitat home. Last year, HFH helped to finish several homes in the surrounding areas of Boston. Grace is also the recipient of the Priscilla King Gray Award for Public Service in 2009.

Shammi Quddus ('10 Course 7) and her partner, Ejaj Ahmad, spent the summer of 2009 in Shammi's hometown of Chittagong, Bangladesh implementing their community service program, Building Bridges Through Leadership Training. It was one of two MIT projects awarded the Davis Projects for Peace Fellowship. Shammi worked to create create dialogue between different peer groups in the spirit of active citizenry, while engaging students in class lectures, reflection, volunteerism, and community service work that totaled 670 hours. Shammi and Ejaj hope to form the Bangladesh Youth Leadership Center. Shammi hopes the Center will become a full-fledged training institute for young students and professionals.

The first goal of "Voces del Pueblo" was to survey current methods of feedback between communities and NGOs. 23 NGO representatives were interviewed, 18 construction sites were visited, and over 35 hours of footage were taken in the first stage of the project. After meticulously documenting this broad spectrum of what practices currently exist for monitoring and evaluating projects, the next stage of the project was executed. This stage's goal was to implement a new feedback loop. After selecting and settling into a small town called Manco Capác, situated amidst farmlands, we taught a month-long videography course for community members ages 12 - 28. We learned how to handle a video camera, plan a film, take effective shots, edit with intention, and advertise to a larger audience. The class resulted in four student produced films that commented on the current state of reconstruction, corruption of the government, and differences in living standards within their community.

After three months of analyzing and recording the social and organizational dynamics of this complex problem, there is now a total of 55+ hours of footage. The goal now is to assemble this information into a film-equivalent research paper for "publication" via screenings in Boston as well as Peru.

Tish Scolnik ('10 Course 2) is a co-inventor of the Leveraged Freedom Chair, a lever-powered wheelchair to assist in the ease of wheelchair travel in developing countries. Tish and her team of fellow inventors won a 2008 IDEAS Competition Award for their design of the Leveraged Freedom Chair. While taking the service learning course "Wheelchair Design for Developing Countries" in her freshman year, Tish was inspired to make a difference in the lives of the physically challenged. She has traveled to Tanzania several times after receiving Public Service Fellowships from the PSC to implement another one of her ideas of a small-business wheelchair, in which the physically disabled are given the opportunity to operate businesses from their wheelchair. In addition to her work on wheelchair design, she has received a Truman Scholarship, one of 60 juniors in the nation, to continue her work in public service.
