Bob explains why startups are not small versions of large companies, and why they require processes and guidelines all their own. He describes the detailed Customer Development process for building scalable startups and explains how Alexander Osterwalder's Business Model Canvas provides a framework for conceiving the innovator's business model and monitoring progress in the Customer Development process.

The Customer Development process and The Startup Owner's Manual bring a nearly scientific method to the typically chaotic startup process. Among the many others embracing the process are 200 teams of innovators funded by the National Science Foundation.

The education sector in India offers enormous opportunity to employ entrepreneurial business models to create a lasting and positive impact. Ashish Rajpal shares the story of iDiscoveri’s impact in Indian schools and possible implications for educational change across the world. He also shares his experiences as an entrepreneur building a sustainable venture in a domain that has only recently started accepting the role of private enterprise. The education sector in India is undergoing transformative change. The government is finally shifting its focus to educational quality. Parents now recognize that educational systems need to change radically if their children are to be truly prepared for success in life. Given the size of India’s education sector (360 million school-aged children), and this need for change, the entrepreneurial opportunity is huge, as the government and NGOs cannot sufficiently address the problem.

The Center’s approach is intensely practical. Recognizing that even the best innovations can be rendered useless if not distributed effectively, we work closely with our Fellows to design not just innovative products and services, but also workable, affordable, and sustainable business distribution methods.

Read more: http://legatum.mit.edu/fellowship

Now, it's no secret that the center of gravity is shifting. Christopher Meyer discuss today's deeply held assumptions about capitalism and the world of other possibilities in emerging economies.

Meyer, Christopher
Entrepreneur, Consultant and Author
Chief Executive, Monitor Networks (2004 -2009)

Chris's mission is to anticipate and shape the future of business. He has pursued this goal as an entrepreneur, executive, consultant, author, and the leader of a think tank.

Based on the ideas in his 2002 book Future Wealth, Chris developed a plan for a business based on a network of thought leaders. In 2006, he co-founded Monitor Talent, to take these ideas forward operationally.

Prior to joining Monitor Group, he was the Director of the Center for Business Innovation at Cap Gemini Ernst & Young, from 1995 until its closing in December 2002. The Center fostered the conversation of leading issues among the business community, developed public conferences, established new services and businesses, and shared what it learned with business practitioners. At the CBI, he founded and served on the Board of the Bios Group, a venture that invested in applications of complexity theory to business.

Earlier, he was a Vice President and Group Head at Mercer Management Consulting, where from 1984 to 1995 he founded and built the firm’s practice in the information industries, comprising telecommunications, hardware, software, and information services and media.
Chris has published three books about adaptive enterprise and network-based innovation, including the BusinessWeek Best Seller Blur: The Speed of Change in the Connected Economy, Future Wealth - the book on which Monitor Talent is based, and It’s Alive: The Coming Convergence of Information, Biology and Business. Project: Phi Wave turbines will use river and tidal energy to power the car batteries on which off-grid Guyanan communities rely for electricity. To insure Phi Wave's profitability and promote entrepreneurship, Phi Wave will sell its cost-effective generators to local entrepreneurs who will then charge energy customers for the generator's output. This summer, the team will construct a prototype and two additional turbines for villages in Guyana.

Project: This battery swap business will serve low-income Tanzanians who lack access to electricity by allowing them to buy and recharge, at local sites, batteries that can power households for up to three days. By collecting customer fees each time they swap an empty battery for a recharged one, the venture will be financially viable. Summer 2009 work will include further market research and construction of the first of four pilot operating sites in Tanzania.
