Yale University

Beginning in 2009, while working with Microsoft Research India, Aishwarya Ratan spent 15 months figuring out how to help local microcredit co-ops, which often struggle with handwritten entries that are illegible, incorrect, or incomplete. Her solution combines digital technology with the familiar paper notebooks that villagers prefer. Co-op members use an electronic ballpoint pen to write in ledgers placed on a slate equipped with software that recognizes handwritten numbers. The slate provides feedback on whether the records are complete and legible, stores them in a database, and gives real-time balance updates, both on a screen and verbally in the local language. The database can be shared with the nongovernmental organizations and banks that back each co-op.

Even someone with only limited movement control can use Avaz to construct phrases that are spoken out loud by an artificial voice.

Synthetic biology offers the prospect of engineering microbes to fight disease or produce biofuels, but designing the necessary DNA instructions is normally an arduous task. With software written by Andrew Phillips, who heads the Biological Computation Group at Microsoft Research in Cambridge, U.K., scientists can simply select the actions they want the microbe's proteins to perform and get back a corresponding DNA sequence.

If successful business depends on innovation, wonders Ricardo Semler, why are automobiles made essentially the same way today as they were in Ford's first assembly line 100 years ago? Parallel parking is one of " the stupidest things we do," says Semler, "If we had a day, could we not by tomorrow afternoon figure out a way to make a car" that handles better in this common situation -- or, on a grander scale, escape from the "silly concept" of oil dependent transportation altogether? The problem, Semler figures, is that there's "something fundamental about organizations and ' leadership that makes it almost impossible for people inside a business to change their own industry." Industries are based on "formats that are basically legacies of military hierarchies," says Semler, which neglect or deny the power of human intuition and democratic participation. In Semler's own firm, there are no five-year business plans (which he views as wishful thinking), but rather "a rolling rationale about numbers." A project takes off only if a critical mass of employees decides to get involved. Staff determine when they need a leader, and then choose their own bosses in a process akin to courtship, says Semler, resulting in a corporate turnover rate of 2% over 25 years. "We'll send our sons anywhere in the world to die for democracy," says Semler, but don't seem to apply the concept to the workplace. This is a tragic error, because "people on their own developing their own solutions will develop something different.

About the Speaker(s): Ricardo Semler heads up the Brazilian company, Semco, which is involved in such diverse ventures as manufacturing mixing equipment, making cooling towers, managing Latin American properties, and environmental consulting.

"You'll be on your way up!
You'll be seeing great sights!
You'll join the high fliers who soar to high heights."

While Dr. Seuss may not have been a direct inspiration, "Oh, the Places You'll Go!" seems especially suited to these four "brainy and footsy people" with exceptional reach.

Take Bradley Carl Edwards, who is designing a space elevator 62 thousand miles long, made out of a three-foot wide ribbon of carbon nanotubes, with one end attached to earth and the other sticking out in space. Send up solar panel satellites and you've got a constant, inexpensive supply of power for the world.

And there's Dava Newman, who is working on a spacesuit made out of liquefied polymers and electro active materials. Her "shrink-wrapped" Biosuit system is intended for "extreme explorers" on multi-year missions to the moon and beyond, who need second skins to augment human performance and minimize bone and muscle loss typical in low gravity environments.

Or Penelope Boston, whose investigation of our planet's harshest caves is leading to models for human habitation in subterranean lava tubes on Mars. Deploy "microbots" to reconnoiter for danger and signs of life in these deep and dangerous places, suggests Boston, then develop life support mechanisms in preparation for human colonies on other worlds.

Are these merely flights of fancy? Robert Cassanova thinks not. His NIAC serves as incubator to these "really good revolutionary ideas," which he believes stretch the imagination but that will also end up as credible technologies.

Charles L. Cooney, SM '67, PhD '70, Professor of Chemical and Biochemical Engieering; Co-Director, Program on the Pharmaceutical Industry; Mark R. Bamforth, Senior Vice President, Corporate Operations and Pharmaceutical ; Genzyme Corporation; Peter Walsh, Director of Business Development, UPS Consulting ; Abbot Weiss, Senior Lecturer; MIT Center for Transportation and Logistics ; ; Daniel W. Engels, Director, R.F.I.D. Healthcare Initiative

Genzyme is a leader in personalized medicine, as Mark Bamforth demonstrates. For instance, the company collects cartilage from a single patient, grows it in the lab, and sends it back securely to that same patient. The system, says Bamforth, tolerates "no mix ups." But the company also deals in drugs sent to hundreds of thousands of kidney dialysis patients. Each kind of product must adhere to a specific kind of manufacturing and distribution process, and the regulations of the FDA and other countries. Bamforth must navigate "a complexity and diversity of supply chains."

Peter Walsh works behind the scenes at UPS, making sure those brown trucks deliver to the right location at the right time. He believes that "healthcare is a good 20 to 30 years behind other industries" in terms of getting the goods from supplier to manufacturer to consumer. "We see in big pharma a silo approach. That needs to change ' and means sharing of information scary to think of in this industry."

Abbott Weiss sees in pharmaceuticals "a highly fragmented set of supply chains" at a time when globalization poses increased risks, such as theft and diversion, and cost pressures. He describes working at Polaroid, and shipping out 120 million packs of film a year, with 140 countries each requiring different labeling. "Exception management is the rule in supply chains," says Weiss. And unlike film, there are "life and death implications of getting the right medicine at the right time and right place." The good news is that much of the technology for solving tracking and distribution problems already exists, Weiss says.

One such technology, radio frequency identification (RFID), is a good first enabling step for pharmaceutical makers, says Daniel Engels. "If I know what I have and where it is, I can do something about it." The critical problem will be "asset visibility," communicating this unique product information to suppliers and customers. And this kind of tagging will prove especially difficult for generic or bulk drugs, sent through distributors. The "end game" is information sharing.
