MIT CTL Advances in Supply Chain Management Webinar Series: Ocean Transportation Reliability: Myths, Realities, and Impacts

Most supply chains are global to some degree, which means that you are probably managing a complicated transportation network that crosses a number of borders, uses multiple modes, and involves a variety of third party companies. And it is likely that ocean shipping is a key part of the transportation mix.

How do you monitor and manage the reliability of the vital ocean segment of your global supply chain?

Are you "managing by anecdote" or do you have real data to support the management practices you are using?

This type of data is now available as a result of new research at the MIT Center for Transportation & Logistics (CTL). The research findings offer a deeper understanding of the incentives and performance mechanisms that shippers, carriers and third parties can use to increase the efficiency of ocean transportation.

CTL invites you to explore the research in our webinar: "Ocean Transportation Reliability: Myths, Realities, and Impacts," that took place on February 6th, 2013, at 1:00 pm EDT.

Dr. Chris Caplice and Dr. Basak Kalcanci described and debunked common myths surrounding ocean transportation, using actual transactional data. Additionally, they described the impact that transit time variability has on logistics costs and outline the business case for addressing this variability.

The event, the second in CTL's Advances in Supply Chain Webinar Series, also covers how shippers currently – and, more importantly, how they should – design, procure, and manage their global ocean transportation networks and gauge the impact of ocean shipping on overall logistics costs.

A special event on Oct. 13, 2011 celebrated the 20th anniversary of the East Japan Railway Company Professorship at MIT — which is currently held by Engineering Systems Division Interim Director Joseph Sussman. The event included remarks from Sussman, JR East Vice Chairman Masaki Ogata, and Claude Canizares, MIT's vice president for research and associate provost.

Sussman provided some historical context for the professorship, thanking JR East for the long-standing and productive collaboration.

Ogata also expressed gratitude for the partnership, acknowledging that JR East has changed dramatically in the last 20 years. He thanked MIT for its support in response to the devastating earthquake in Japan earlier this year, and illustrated how JR East kept passengers safe with substantial safety counter-measures put into place before the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

Though trained as an environmental economist, Claudia Octaviano is currently working towards her PhD in the Engineering Systems Division at MIT. But an economist among engineers isn't as odd as it sounds; Claudia's program integrates engineering, social sciences, and policy to address environmental issues.

"The idea within the Engineering Systems Divisions is that these are very complex issues that you won't be able to solve just by looking at technology, or with just the economics," she explains. "You need to integrate the three parts. They call it Complex Systems Analysis."

Originally from Mexico, Claudia studied the costs to society from power plant pollution, moving on to air quality and evaluation techniques at Yale, and finally focusing on climate change. Her work with Mario Molina and the Mexican Minister of Energy, on developing energy pathways that could lead Mexico towards long-term economic development, led her to MIT in 2009.

Claudia's work in the Joint Program centers on determining Mexico's mitigation potential through the use of sectoral approaches. By implementing policies to decarbonize the electricity sector, for example, Mexico could trade emissions with other countries that have either economy-wide or sectoral cap-and-trade systems. Because the electricity sector contributes a big share of emissions, a sectoral cap could result in a significant environmental benefit. However, focusing only in one sector of the economy means higher costs and efficiency loss when compared to an economy-wide cap-and-trade system.

Still, Claudia's opinion on the matter is: "Do you want an everything-or-nothing situation, or do we start with something? The International Energy Agency proposes that large developing countries can start [mitigation measures] through sectoral trading. It could be a first approach to an [economy-wide] cap-and-trade system."

Claudia works to improve the Joint Program's Emissions Prediction and Policy Analysis (EPPA) model to more accurately reflect the electricity and oil sectors in Mexico. Her research will reveal which technologies will become important in Mexico under different future climate policy scenarios. These findings will also determine the costs of alternative mitigation options.

Political will does not seem to be a barrier to addressing climate change in Mexico, Claudia explains. In fact, she believes the Mexican administration is very willing to address climate change but lacks funds. Yet beyond the issue of money, she also feels that capacity building and technology transfers from developed countries are crucial. "We can do a lot if we learn to prioritize and if we accelerate the state-of-the-art technologies available."

Looking forward, Claudia draws inspiration from Dr. Mario Molina. "He is very influential. People don't always want to hear only economic equations-- they want to hear a story. We need someone like Dr. Molina to tell a story. I have my model... now how do I tell a story about it?"

NextLab II: Launching Mobile Ventures for the Next Billion Consumers is a hands-on technology implementation and business execution course in which students develop high-impact mobile ventures. Such ventures are intended to enable mobile phone applications to scale-up and have widespread social benefit in developing communities and countries worldwide.

Students work in multidisciplinary teams on term-long projects, closely collaborating with project partners, experts in communications technologies and sustainable business models, field practitioners, and with NextLab alumni . Students are expected to leverage technical ingenuity in both mobile and internet technologies together with entrepreneurial zeal in order to implement viable solutions that address social challenges in areas such as health, economic empowerment, education, and civic engagement.

Similar to all NextLab courses, NextLab II's final class period will be an open event in which all student team projects are presented to the pubic through live demos, poster sessions, and formal presentations. NextLab II students may follow up their projects with Summer travel grants for deployment in target markets.

A. Richard Newton, Dean of the College of Engineering, and Roy W. Carlson Professor of Engineering, University of California, Berkeley

What's "big, complex and hairy," and requires the efforts of an impassioned, interdisciplinary team to tackle? The answer, says A. Richard Newton, is the "one-off problem" _ the kind of sprawling social, scientific and engineering puzzle that increasingly challenges contemporary society. Think about the conundrum of affordable healthcare, or emergency preparedness. How do you address such enormous issues? Newton's answer is CITRIS, the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society. This partnership among academia, government and industry specializes in attacking problems critical to the quality of life, and whose solutions require "societal-scale information systems." Current CITRIS research includes designing information technology for the energy-deprived developing world. This demands, says Newton, a "complete rethinking of the architecture of information and communication systems." Work so far points toward wireless technologies in remote villages, with communication antennas flying atop balloons anchored by cables. And on the home front: Newton points out that one-third of the total national outlay on healthcare derives from lab tests -- about 500 billion dollars a year. Could we reduce the tab by coming up with new kinds of testing that don't require a visit to the office, and whose results could be more efficiently communicated to healthcare providers, Newton wonders. Cracking any of these problems requires an understanding of information systems, and benefits enormously from "passionate individuals" pulling together around a shared vision _ "like the moon shot."

About the Speaker(s): Over the past 25 years, Newton has received numerous awards for his research and teaching. Most recently, he received the 2003 Phil Kaufman Award for his research and entrepreneurial contributions to the electronic design automation industry.

In addition to his academic work, Newton has helped to found a number of design technology companies. He also serves on the Board of Trustees for the Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology. He is a Member of the ACM, Fellow of the IEEE, and a member of the National Academy of Engineering.

Newton received the B. Eng. and M.Eng.Sci degrees from the University of Melbourne, Australia, in 1973 and 1975 respectively, and his Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley in 1978. He joined the faculty at Berkeley in 1979.
He died in January 2007.

James A. Champy, '63, SM '65, Chairman of Consulting Perot Systems Corporation; Life Member, MIT Corporation

James Champy finds much to admire at MIT. But as a seasoned insider, and as a successful entrepreneur, business writer and consultant, he thinks the Institute could use some serious shaking up. As rationale for an MIT redesign, Champy points to increased competition from other universities, here and abroad; new fields opening up in science; the need to accomplish more and innovate with fewer resources; and the pressures of globalization. To maintain its strength, says Champy, MIT must pursue a number of "principles." In terms of education, he suggests MIT balance teaching the practical with the unusual; regularly rethink course content with an eye to evolving science and technology; and most dramatically, consider creation of an undergraduate core engineering program, one that is five years or longer, "to produce engineers who can be fundamentally different in some way." He envisions that MIT's will become "the standard for the profession." Research should "identify problems that are big and important," which move ideas and people across schools, enabling collaboration. Says Champy, "MIT must always remain a meritocracy," in order to promote substantive change. He also wants MIT to aim students at key decision-making jobs, teach them how to analyze flaws in smart organizations, and to give entrepreneurial students "a sense of higher purpose," like modern-day Andrew Carnegies.

About the Speaker(s): James A. Champy is an authority on the management issues surrounding business reengineering and organizational change. Prior to joining Perot Systems, Champy was chairman and CEO of CSC Index, the management consulting arm of Computer Science Corporation. He was one of the original founders of Index, a $200-million consulting practice that was acquired by CSC in 1988.

Champy has also authored such well-received books as Reengineering the Corporation: A Manifesto for Business Revolution, which sold more than 2,500,000 copies and spent more than a year on The New York Times bestseller list. His articles appear in major newspapers and magazines throughout the world.

Champy earned his B.S. and his M.S. in civil engineering from MIT, and his J.D. from Boston College Law School. Champy serves on the board of Analog Devices, Inc., on MIT's Board of Trustees, and on the Board of Overseers of the Boston College Law School.

Host(s): School of Engineering, Engineering Systems Division

Tape #: T19893.
