How do invisible actors influence what we overlook in history? Few people have heard of Lu Gwei-djen, and those who have know her as the woman who inspired the Joseph Needham to write the multi-volume series Science and Civilization in China.

Yet far beyond a muse, Lu led a highly unusual life, enjoying a successful career as a biochemist in a century that welcomed few women in science, let alone Chinese women in science. She left China during the Sino-Japanese war, received her PhD at Cambridge and later served as the adviser of nutritional science for UNESCO in France. But despite her accomplishments, Lu avoided publicity, refusing requests to interview her or publish her biography.

Why was such an ambitious woman so shy?

Written and edited by Lan Angela Li
Special thanks to the Needham Research Institute

In 1971, Lu Gwei-djen wrote an essay on "The Inner Elixir" a Taoist physiology that could be applied to reverse the state of aging tissues. Lu explained that this technique was "physiological through and through" not to be confused with the "spiritual alchemy" of the West. But as we uncover drafts of the Inner Elixir, we discover that Lu had censored her own ambivalence towards this inner alchemy.

Was her hesitation in her work a reflection of a kind of ambiguity in her own way of being? Did it have anything to do with her illness two years before?

Written by Lan Angela Li
Special thanks to the Needham Research Institute
Advised by Christopher Leighton, Harriet Ritvo, and Shigehisa Kuriyama

Lu ultimately described Chinese medicine as paradox—clinically proven, yet theoretically antiquated innovative, but entirely medieval. Despite having and argued for an alternate materiality of the body in her writing about the inner elixir and acupuncture, no references to the Chinese body appeared in her description of the decay of her own body.

Written by Lan Angela Li
Special thanks to the Needham Research Institute
Advised by Christopher Leighton, Harriet Ritvo, and Shigehisa Kuriyama

EngageMedia is a citizen video sharing platform, as well as a training, network development, software and research project based in Southeast Asia and Australia.

EngageMedia has been involved in founding a number of video activist networks (Transmission, video4change, Sambel) to build the field of civic video and challenge the increasing enclosure of the digital commons by the rise of new online platforms.

Their work also includes the development of open source video sharing tools (Plumi) and a training program tailored around video distribution and audience engagement, as well a focus on online security.

Andrew Lowenthal, co-founder and Executive Director, will outline EngageMedia's work, focusing on the nature of scaling; in particular as regards developing strategic networks and open source software, and their implications and limitations in creating civic media today.

??In this talk, Director, Katerina Cizek and Senior Producer, Gerry Flahive, compare two distinct projects within their HIGHRISE story universe (Out My Window and One Millionth Tower) in order to explore the multitude of co-creative possibilities in a new kind of documentary practice. ??The National Film Board of Canada’s HIGHRISE project is a multi-year digital documentary experiment exploring the human condition of vertical living around the globe. This Emmy-award winning project innovates with new approaches to both documentary form and content.

HIGHRISE Director Katerina Cizek is an Emmy-winning documentary-maker working across many media platforms. Her work has documented the Digital Revolution, and has itself become part of the movement. Recently, she was listed as Reelscreen’s 2011 Trailblazers in Non-Fiction, alongside Wim Wenders and the Channel 4 Commissioning Team.

NFB Senior Producer Gerry Flahive has worked on more than 40 films, such as award-winners Just Watch Me: Trudeau and the 70s Generation and Manufactured Landscapes. Recent projects include the groundbreaking St. Michael’s Hospital/Filmmaker-in-Residence project, the epic Great Lakes documentary, Waterlife, and Paris 1919, inspired by Margaret MacMillan’s bestseller.

Abstract

The foundations of the global energy system are shifting, with a resurgence in oil and gas production in some countries, a retreat from nuclear power signalled in some others and signs of increasing policy focus on energy efficiency. Against this backdrop, the World Energy Outlook 2012 brings together the latest data and policy developments to present up to date, authoritative projections of energy trends through to 2035 and insights into what they mean for energy security, environmental sustainability and economic development. Oil, coal, natural gas, renewables and nuclear power are all covered, together with an update on climate change issues.

What happens when a tech-minded entrepreneur is unexpectedly chosen to lead a big city government bureaucracy? Gabe Klein was an unconventional pick to head the District of Columbia's Department of Transportation when he was hired back in 2008, by then-mayor Adrian Fenty. He'd been a Zipcar executive. He helped found a local boutique food-truck company. He grew up in a Virginia ashram called Yogaville. But he had never worked in government. Over the next 23 months Klein implemented a program of transformative innovation, rapidly rolling out bike-sharing, new bike lanes, streetcar plans and next-generation parking infrastructure. Now Klein is a year-and-a-half into his second unexpected job in government, as the head of Chicago's Department of Transportation under Mayor Rahm Emanuel. Join MIT Visiting Scholar Aaron Naparstek in conversation with one of America's most visionary and inspiring new urban leaders.
